I called her a week before to ask what to bring and she said don't worry about it, just something small, so I made a 9x13 pan that feeds maybe 8 people. Walked in and my cousin had brought the exact same mac and cheese recipe, plus an aunt did a third one, and we had more mac than turkey on the table. My mom pulled me aside and asked why I didn't bring a salad instead, like she hadn't specifically told me small dish. Next time I'm just bringing a pie and letting people fight over it, at least nobody double brings a pie. Does your family do the potluck thing where nobody coordinates and you end up with 40 deviled eggs?
Oh man, the triple mac and cheese is a classic. My family does the same thing every year, we had like 5 bowls of potato salad one time because nobody wanted to be the one who brought a veggie. The potluck rules in my family are basically "bring whatever, god help you if it overlaps" and then everyone acts shocked when it happens. Your mom telling you small dish and then getting mad about it is the real kicker though, that's just setting you up to fail no matter what.
