Uncle Bob brought his new girlfriend to Thanksgiving last week
She showed up in a full white dress and announced she's vegan right as my mom put the turkey on the table. Has anyone else had a guest totally derail a holiday meal like that?

Last Christmas my brother brought his new girlfriend who insisted on saying a prayer before dinner, which would have been fine except she made it like a 15 minute thing where she kept thanking God for specific things she noticed around the house. My dad started snoring halfway through and my mom was trying to hide her laugh behind a napkin. The turkey got cold and my grandma just started eating while the girl was still going. I almost choked on my sweet tea trying not to bust out laughing when my dog walked over and laid down right in the middle of the prayer circle. Ever had a holiday meal turn into a total circus like that?

That whole situation is a classic case of needing a timer rule. I've been through the same thing and now we set a two minute limit for any pre-dinner prayer or speech. If it goes longer, someone gets to tap their glass and say "Alright, the food's getting cold." Honestly, your grandma eating through it is the most relatable thing I've heard all day and I'm totally on her side. Next time just tell your brother to give his girlfriend a heads up that the dog is known to interrupt long prayers.

Hold on a second, I gotta say your grandma sneaking bites during the prayer is the real power move here. That dog laying down in the middle of the circle definitely stole the show, not the girl praying. Nothing ruins a holiday meal faster than cold food and someone trying to be the main character.
