My mother-in-law's white carpet cured my carpet-cleaning obsession

For years I insisted on renting a steam cleaner every spring and deep cleaning every rug in the house, including the hallway runner. Last Thanksgiving my mother-in-law spilled a full glass of red wine on her brand new white carpet and just shrugged, said 'it adds character,' and went back to carving the turkey. I spent the next hour watching everyone step around that stain like it was a monument, and nobody seemed bothered by it. Last month she finally had the carpet replaced before Christmas and my wife caught me staring at the old spot, realizing I'd thought about that spill more than she ever did. It hit me that my whole cleaning ritual was less about hygiene and more about control, and that nobody in my family actually cares if the stairs have a faint mark. So I sold my steam cleaner for forty bucks on Craigslist and now I'm the guy who just spots-cleans with a rag. Has anyone else given up a family tradition that turned out to be more about your own nerves than actual mess?

Three weeks after my dad died I reorganized his entire garage alphabetically, took me two weekends, and my mom finally admitted he'd kept the drill bits in a coffee can since 1987. That's when I realized half the stuff we do for "family" is just us trying to feel useful. You probably saved yourself forty bucks and a lot of pointless anxiety, good trade.
