My cousin asked me point blank at Easter dinner why I wasn't 'settled down' yet

We were at my parents' house in Sacramento last Easter, passing around the ham. My cousin Mark, who I see maybe once a year, puts his fork down and just stares at me. He says, 'So, Hayden, you're what, 32 now? When are you going to get a real career and a wife? The warehouse thing can't be forever.' The whole table went quiet. My mom dropped a serving spoon. I just said, 'I like my job, Mark,' and went back to eating my potatoes. It was so blunt and out of nowhere. He didn't even ask how I was, just went straight for the life audit. Has anyone else had a relative just ambush you with the personal questions in front of everyone like that?

Life audit" is such a perfect way to put it.

Right? It makes the whole thing sound less scary than "crisis." I did one last year and ended up cutting out two weekly meetings that were just time sucks. Also realized I was spending way too much on subscriptions I never used. Felt like cleaning out a closet for your brain.

That "life audit" thing really hit home. It's awful when someone puts you on the spot like that, especially with the whole table watching. I'm sorry you had to deal with that, it's just rude.
