Last Thanksgiving I compared my mom's green bean casserole to my aunt's and wow

My aunt uses canned soup and fried onions from a bag, the usual stuff. Mom switched to fresh green beans and made a homemade mushroom sauce from a recipe she found online. The difference was crazy, the fresh beans held up way better and didn't get mushy. Has anyone else tried upgrading a family recipe and got grilled for it?

Two Thanksgivings ago my cousin swapped her famous chocolate pie recipe for a "healthier" version with avocado as the secret ingredient. She got roasted so bad she brought the original ingredients as a peace offering last year. Sometimes the crowd just wants the exact same thing they've always had and that's okay.

Defend the canned version all day. Nobody's grandma got famous from scratch cooking and tradition exists because it actually works.
