Honestly, keep a couple of dumb questions ready to go for those lulls. Stuff like "what's the best pizza place around here" or "seen any good movies lately". Tbh it doesn't matter what you ask, just having something in your back pocket helps a ton. Ngl I've even asked people about the weirdest thing on the buffet table to get a laugh. It breaks the ice and gets people talking about something easy.
