After my aunt brought up politics at Thanksgiving, I stopped going to family dinners for two years

Oh man, that brings back memories. My uncle once spent an entire Easter dinner explaining why he thought pineapple on pizza was a government conspiracy to distract us from real issues. I just sat there holding my Hawaiian slice like a fool. I mean, I get it, family dinners can become these weird battlegrounds for stuff nobody asked about. Maybe it's just me but sometimes the best move is to just bow out for a while. Two years sounds like a solid reset honestly.

It's just pizza toppings and a family dinner, not a declaration of war. People act like every disagreement is some huge deal when half the time you can just nod and eat your food.

Youve got my full sympathy on this one. Family dinners can turn into a minefield real quick when someone decides to turn the table into a debate stage. I had a similar situation with my own aunt a few years back, and it took me a good year before I felt ready to sit down with everyone again. @torres.sage mentioned that two years feels like a solid reset, and I agree completely. Sometimes stepping away is the only way to keep the relationship from getting ruined over something as silly as a political opinion or a pizza topping argument. Your mental peace matters more than forcing yourself to sit through those tense meals.
