Tried that new silicon gasket sealant on a Cessna 172 oil pan

It leaked worse than the old cork gasket ever did, and I spent 3 hours cleaning the mess off the hangar floor. Has anyone else had bad luck with those fancy sealants on light aircraft?

That cork gasket on my old Bonanza never gave me a drop of trouble for ten years. Always figured if it ain't broke, why fix it with silicon goop?

josephl67 nailed it with that "if it ain't broke" line. I tried that same silicone stuff on my Cherokee's oil pan last spring, and it was a disaster. It oozed out everywhere when I torqued the bolts down, and I was still wiping it off the floor for a week after. I'll stick with the old cork gasket from now on.
