The day I found out torque specs on lugs are a suggestion to some people

Last month I was swapping tires on a F-150 that came in for a rotation, and the front lugs were so tight I had to stand on the breaker bar. Popped one with a grunt and it snapped clean off the stud. I looked up the spec on that truck, 150 ft-lbs, and I bet that thing was torqued to like 400 by whoever used an impact gun and called it a day. I've had this happen maybe 5 times in 12 years, but it still blows my mind that people skip the torque wrench on something that holds a wheel on at 70 mph. Anyone else run into studs that felt like they were welded on from a quick lube place?

That "called it a day" line hits home, it's the same mindset as people who tighten a pickle jar until it cracks just because they can. I've noticed this pattern everywhere, like how folks crank the hose on a gas pump handle and walk off, or slam a car door twice as hard as needed. It's like some folks think "good enough" means "as tight as my arm can possibly go" and then they wonder why stuff breaks later.
