The $800 scan tool gamble - worth it or a waste?
I dropped $800 on a high-end Autel scan tool last year thinking it would pay for itself in diag time, but half the features are locked behind subscription fees I can't justify. My old $150 code reader catches 90% of problems just fine, and the fancy one just sits in my box. Is it really worth spending big on pro gear, or am I just falling for marketing hype?

I went through almost the exact same thing with a Snap-on scanner years ago, ended up just selling it and sticking with my old Actron. Those high end tools are great if someone else is paying the bill, but for home use a solid basic reader and a bit of YouTube is usually all you need.

My Autel MaxiCOM MK808 is sitting right next to me covered in dust. Paid $750 and found out the bidirectional controls and coding stuff I actually wanted need a $200 a year subscription. My $130 Innova reader pulls codes and live data just fine for 95% of what I do on my own cars and friends projects. The fancy screen looks cool but it's basically a paperweight now cause I refuse to pay more. Your old $150 reader is probably the smarter move honestly, these tool companies are just greedy with the subscription nonsense.

Does that subscription fee actually unlock new features or just code that's already on the tool?
