Spent 4 hours chasing a rattle in a Civic that turned out to be a penny in the door pocket
Customer dropped off a 2011 Civic last Friday saying something was rattling in the rear door and it was driving him nuts on the highway. I pulled the door panel, checked the window regulator, tapped on the inner skin, even put new clips on the trim, and nothing showed up until I tipped the door and heard the clink, then fished out a penny that had been sitting in the bottom of the pocket for who knows how long. Do you charge full diag on something like that or just hand it back and laugh?
Man, a penny in the door pocket is a new one, usually it's a screw or a clip that fell down inside the door cavity itself. Thing is, the pocket sits right on the door panel, so that penny would only rattle when the door got slammed or hit a good bump, not really at highway speed. A steady highway rattle is almost always something loose in the latch rod or a speaker screw backing out. I'd have kept digging after the penny came out, because if the customer drives off and hears it again, that four hours turns into a comeback.
