A guy at the salvage yard in Phoenix tried to sell me a 'mint' quarter panel with a bullet hole

He swore it was just a 'factory drain port' and got real mad when I pointed out the copper jacket still stuck in the inner structure. I offered him 20 bucks for it as a joke, and he actually took the deal. Anyone ever had a yard try to pass off obvious damage as a feature?

You got a good deal for twenty bucks honestly. What I do now is bring a small magnet in my pocket, the kind from a hardware store. Run it along the panel, a factory spot weld will feel smooth but bondo over damage will make that magnet slide or not stick right. Saved me from a few "clean" fenders that were mostly filler.

Magnet trick is smart, but what about aluminum body panels? My buddy bought a truck with a "clean" bed, turns out the whole thing was aluminum and he looked like a fool waving a magnet around. Sometimes you just have to get your fingers in there and feel for the texture changes yourself. Old school body guys can spot filler from ten feet away just by how the light reflects. Makes you wonder how many cars out there are just sculpted bondo waiting for a hot day to sag.

Yeah, I read a forum post once where a guy found a "clean" door with what looked like a perfect round hole, seller called it a factory speaker mount. It was clearly drilled out for a lock after a theft. Some of these yard guys have the worst poker faces. You got lucky he took the twenty, that panel is only good for practice or a wall decoration now. What did you end up doing with it?
