Was that a real aurora over Lake Superior last Tuesday?
I drove up to the north shore near Duluth last week, around 11pm on Tuesday, and saw this wild green glow that wasn't showing on my phone's aurora app until about 20 minutes later. I only had my old DSLR with a kit lens, no tripod, so I propped it on a cooler and did a 15-second exposure at ISO 3200. The photo came out decent but the colors looked more purple in person than what the camera caught. Is that a common thing with auroras, or did I maybe mess up the white balance? Also, I'm heading back in three weeks, should I rent a wide-angle lens or just stick with what I've got?
Wait so the app didn't show anything until after you already saw it with your eyes? That's kinda wild, did you check if there was a solar storm warning that day or did it just come out of nowhere for you? Also curious how purple we're talking, like pinkish edges or the whole thing?
