Warning: my 'ask anything' posts went from getting 20 replies to crickets in about 3 months

I used to post here all the time, just random questions about life stuff, and people would jump in with advice or their own stories. It felt like a real chat. Then, maybe back in March, I noticed a shift. The feed got flooded with these super specific, almost technical questions that felt like homework problems, not the open 'ask anything' vibe it used to be. I posted something simple like 'any good tricks for getting a kid to eat vegetables?' and it got buried under posts about quantum physics and tax law loopholes. I think the community description got misunderstood, or maybe a bunch of new people from some other forum came in and changed the whole tone. Now it feels like you need a PhD to even understand the questions, let alone answer them. Has anyone else watched their favorite casual spot turn into something totally different?

Ugh, yes, and it drives me nuts. I saw the same thing happen in a group for local plant swaps. It went from "hey my tomato leaves look funny" to these long posts about soil pH science with charts. It totally killed the fun, helpful vibe. Now it feels like you have to write a research paper just to ask a simple question. Did you stick around and try to post again, or did you just give up like I did?

My local gardening group got so bad with that. I posted a picture of a weird bug on my basil and got three paragraphs about insect taxonomy before someone just said "yeah, that's a squash bug, spray it with soapy water.

Man, I saw a whole article about this exact thing happening to online groups. It said when forums get too focused on being "expert" spaces, regular folks just stop talking. Honestly @nina_johnson86, that plant swap story is a perfect example. Tbh it makes the whole place feel super unwelcoming, like a classroom instead of a chat. I miss when people just talked like normal and helped each other out without showing off.
