Just realized my grandma's 1974 recipe card for cornbread took me 4 batches to get right
I found an old index card in my mom's recipe box from my grandma in Abilene, and it said "bake until done." That was it. No temp, no time, nothing. It took me 4 tries over 2 weekends and a $9 bag of cornmeal to figure out it meant 425 for about 22 minutes in a cast iron skillet. How do you all handle old recipes with vague instructions like that?
Did she write anything else on that card that seemed like a clue at the time but made zero sense until later? My great aunt's cards are full of stuff like "butter the size of an egg" and "a slow oven," which apparently meant 300 back then, but nobody wrote that down anywhere. I spent a whole afternoon trying to figure out if "medium" meant the pan or the heat. The worst one just said "cook till it smells right" and I still don't know what that means for a pie.
