HVAC guy in Nashville told me my filter habit was backwards, he was right
I used to swap my furnace filter every 3 months like clockwork, but an HVAC tech doing a tune-up last spring said I was wasting money and actually stressing the blower with cheap fiberglass ones. He showed me the static pressure reading on his gauge, which I'd never even heard of, and the numbers spiked whenever he dropped the filter door. Switched to a 4-inch pleated media filter that I check every 6 months instead, and my electric bill went down about $40 a month. Anyone else get corrected on basic maintenance that no one ever explained properly?
That static pressure thing is a real eye opener and it goes even further than you'd think. A 1 inch fiberglass filter might only catch like 10 percent of the dust floating around, so all that junk ends up coating your blower wheel and the AC coil instead. Once that coil gets a blanket of dust on it, your system has to run longer to hit the same temp, which is where the extra money on the bill comes from. A lot of people don't realize the filter isn't just there to protect the air in the house, it's there to protect the equipment, and the cheap ones barely do that job at all.
