My go-to mixer stopped mixing at the mixer in Chandler and I just stood there
Last Thursday I hit up the East Valley Business Mixer at a spot off Alma School in Chandler, and my whole plan was to finally meet the 3 people I had been emailing for weeks. The room was packed, maybe 80 folks, and I could not get a single real chat going because I spent half of it trying to flag down the one guy I came to see. Back when I started going to these things in 2019, you just walked up and talked to anyone, no apps, no QR codes, no pressure. Do the bigger mixers actually work for you, or do you get more out of the small ones where you know 9 out of 10 faces?
The part about standing there trying to flag down one guy hits home. My buddy Dave did the same thing at a mixer in Tempe last month, drove 40 minutes and spent the whole night waiting by the drink table hoping this one recruiter would walk by. He finally gave up and just started talking to a random guy next to him, and that turned into his best lead of the year. The big ones can work but you gotta stop chasing the people you came for.
