My fieldwork in Egypt taught me to value aerial surveys

I thought aerial surveys were lazy archaeology. A drone shot found a temple complex. Now I push for more tech in digs.

How did that change your step-by-step plan when starting a new site? Do you run the tech stuff first now, before anyone even puts a shovel in the ground?

That drone shot finding a temple complex is exactly it. I had the same turn-around with LiDAR on a dig in Belize. We were cutting through jungle for weeks and getting nowhere. Fired up the LiDAR for a single flyover and it showed a whole hidden causeway system right under our feet. Totally changed how I plan any site work now.

That Angkor Wat lidar find in Cambodia was wild.
