Can we talk about the Sutton Hoo helmet? I always thought the 'face' was a mask, but a curator at the British Museum said it's actually a full helmet you wear... that changed my whole view of the find.

Saw the helmet on a school trip years ago. Honestly thought it was just a fancy death mask too. The guide put it on a dummy head and it clicked, like oh wow that's a real helmet for a real person.

Wait, so for years we all just thought some ancient king was buried with a weird metal face plate? Like he was worried about bad skin in the afterlife... turns out he was just being practical about protecting his actual head.

Totally get that. Saw a replica at a museum once. Looked like a fancy mask in the case. Then they had a picture of someone wearing it. Blew my mind. Changes the whole vibe from a ritual thing to a real battle helmet. Makes you wonder about the person who wore it.
