A chat with a volunteer at the Cahokia Mounds site changed how I look at old maps

I was talking to a volunteer named Frank at the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Illinois last weekend. He pointed to a map showing the old city layout and said, 'You know, they didn't just build this place. They engineered it to align with the sun.' I'd always just seen it as a bunch of mounds, but he made me see it as a giant calendar and meeting place all in one. Has anyone else had a guide point out something that made a site 'click' for them?

Did Frank also sell you a timeshare in the ancient solar alignment pyramid scheme?

Frank sounds like he actually knew his stuff, unlike @jennyh41's timeshare guy. A guide at Mesa Verde once showed me how the cliff dwellings were placed for shade and it totally made sense.
