DAE cut a limb and leave a huge stub because you thought flush cuts were bad? I lost a 40 foot maple that way
Three summers back I pruned a sugar maple in a client's yard in Concord and left about 6 inch stubs on every branch because an old timer once barked at me about not cutting into the branch collar. I figured more stub meant safer tree. That maple dropped two big limbs the next spring and when I finally looked close, the stubs had rotted straight into the trunk. Turns out a proper cut right at the branch bark ridge and collar seals over fast, but a long stub is just a dead stick inviting decay, and I had been doing it for almost 4 years on maybe 60 trees. I switched to a three cut method with the undercut first and my wound closure looks way better after one season. Anyone else get bad advice from someone they trusted and only figure it out after a tree pays for it?
