Tried swapping a Frigidaire ice maker without unplugging it first... dumb move
Was at a job on Tuesday in Arlington, working on a Frigidaire side-by-side. Customer said ice maker was clicking but not dropping ice. I figured I could swap the module real quick without pulling the plug. Touched a wire to the wrong terminal and got a flash and a pop. Ended up frying the control board too. Learned the hard way: always kill the power before touching anything inside these things. Has anyone else made that mistake?

Had a similar thing happen on a Whirlpool last year. Forgot to switch off the breaker. Fried the main board and the ice maker module at the same time. Those control boards are expensive too, like 150 bucks for the part. Now I always take the extra minute to pull the plug or flip the breaker.

150 bucks for a board seems steep but honestly that's just the price of convenience nowadays... I've fixed a few appliances without flipping the breaker and never had an issue, maybe I'm just lucky. My old Maytag took a direct zap when I bumped a wire against the frame and it just tripped the house breaker instead of frying anything. Not saying you're wrong but sometimes these boards are tougher than people give them credit for.
