OEM parts vs universal kits on older washers, I learned my lesson

Had a 12 year old Whirlpool with a broken drain pump, went with the $35 universal kit instead of the $80 OEM part. Fit fine but the noise was unbearable, customer called me back twice before I swapped it out. Anyone else just stick to factory parts on anything past 10 years old?

You got a call back twice over noise from a drain pump? That seems like a lot. I've thrown universal parts on old machines plenty of times and yeah, some are louder, but you just stuff some extra insulation around it or live with it. These things sit in laundry rooms and basements, not living rooms. Maybe your customer was just picky, or the mount was slightly off, not the part itself. OEM is nice but on a 12 year old washer, that's a big chunk of the machine's value just for a pump. I'd rather take the gamble and pocket the difference.
