The stat that floored me: AI training costs dropped 99% for the same image task in 6 years
I was reading a 2024 Stanford AI Index report last night and it said the cost to train an image classifier to a set benchmark fell from around $1,000 in 2017 to under a dollar by 2023. That kind of price collapse usually means a tech is about to be everywhere, so what everyday thing do you think gets quietly disrupted first?
Watched the same thing happen with OCR. Back in like 2018 my old team was looking at a quote to read scanned forms and it was thousands per month, now you can spin up something free that does it better in an afternoon. When a price falls that hard the tech stops being a project and just becomes a feature, like nobody budgets for spellcheck right? My guess is anything involving sorting or tagging photos and docs goes first because the models are already good enough and the cost is basically noise now. The stuff that needs to be right every single time is where it'll stay expensive and stay human for a while.
