I finally picked a smaller partner over the big agency after 6 months of back and forth

We had to choose between a 50-person agency and a 3-person shop for our healthcare client's campaign. I went with the small team because they actually knew the local market in Austin where the client is based. So far they have delivered faster turnaround and better results than the bigger firm ever did on our trial projects. Has anyone else taken a risk on a smaller partner and seen it pay off?

Honestly I used to be all about the big firms until I read this. Your line "they actually knew the local market in Austin" really hit me. I had a similar thing happen with a tiny web design crew for a restaurant chain based in Portland. The big company we were talking to sent us generic templates but the small team knew exactly which neighborhoods to target and even suggested local food bloggers to work with. It completely flipped my thinking. Now I look at the actual people on the ground instead of the logo on the proposal.

Whoa, slow down with the small shop hype train. Big agencies have those 50 people for a reason, and it's usually because they can actually scale up when a campaign explodes and you need overnight staffing. A three person team might know Austin, but can they handle a full market rollout if the client wants to go national next quarter?
