I thought I was being smart by skipping the 401k match at my first job.

My friend asked me last week how much I had saved in my old account from when I worked at that coffee shop, and I had to admit I never signed up because I wanted the extra $50 in my paycheck. She just stared at me and said, 'You left free money on the table for three years.' What's the dumbest financial thing you did when you were just starting out?

Left free money on the table" is the worst. I finally set up auto-enroll.

But what if you really needed that extra cash each week to get by?

You mention needing the extra cash to get by, but was there really nothing you could have cut back on instead? That match is a huge part of your pay that you just gave back. How do you even start to fix a mindset that sees free money as optional?
