Took me 3 years to realize I was caulking my baseboards wrong
I always ran a bead and smoothed it with my finger, then wondered why it cracked after a few months. A painter buddy watched me do it and pointed out I was filling the gap between the baseboard and the floor, not the gap between the baseboard and the wall. Anyone else make that dumb mistake when they started out?

That gap should get foam backer rod, not caulk.

Right, because squishing a rope of foam into a crack is somehow better than just slapping some caulk on it and calling it a day. I always figured foam backer rod was what you used when you had a special vendetta against your fingers. Guess I'll go buy a whole roll of the stuff for a gap my dog could fill with a slobber.
