My neighbor's 'quick fix' for his roof leak just cost him $4,000
Three years ago, he tried sealing a leak near his chimney with some tar from a tube. Last month, the whole section of roof decking around it was rotten and had to be replaced. Has anyone else in the Heights seen this kind of damage from a small, ignored leak?

Oh man, that's rough. My buddy did the same thing and @nina735 is right, the water just sat there. His whole attic floor was soft as sponge.

Four grand for a tube of tar is insane. That stuff just traps the water in and lets the wood rot from the inside out. Seen it happen on my own porch overhang a few years back. Water damage never just goes away, it just gets more expensive.

My neighbor Greg spent three thousand sealing his garage roof with that black goop. Two winters later the whole corner beam just crumbled like wet cardboard when he touched it. They had to tear off half the roof to fix the rot they couldn't see. He said it was the most expensive band-aid he ever bought.
