Hit 15 years in my house this spring and it got me thinking...
My place just turned 15 years old and I realized I've replaced the water heater twice now for a total of around $2,400 sunk into that one thing alone. Never thought I'd spend that much just to keep hot water running but here we are. What's a home expense that surprised you when you added it all up over time?

Honestly, is a water heater really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things? Two replacements over 15 years is like $160 a year which is basically nothing compared to what you'd spend on a landlord's markup or apartment rent increases. Tbh, owning your own place means you get to pick the good stuff that lasts instead of some cheap builder grade junk that dies every 5 years.

$160 a year is assuming it lasts exactly 15 years, which is optimistic.

Exactly what I tell people. Picked a quality unit myself, zero regrets. Peace of mind is worth it too.
