Bought a $26 water alarm for my water heater closet and it saved me a $900 floor job
I live in a older house over by Eubank and the water heater is tucked in a closet right next to the hallway carpet. About 8 months back I put one of those cheap battery water alarms on the floor back there. Little thing, maybe 26 bucks at the hardware store on Lomas. Two weeks ago I'm eating dinner and it starts screaming. Sure enough the bottom of the tank was weeping and there was a puddle spreading toward the carpet. I shut the valve and had a guy swap the heater out for $780 the next morning, but the carpet and the subfloor never got touched. A neighbor down the block had the same thing happen and insurance took weeks plus a deductible. I know it sounds like the boring-est purchase ever but that beeping thing paid for itself about 30 times over. Do you all put these under sinks and by the washer too, or am I just being paranoid?
My water alarm story is way less cool. Bought one for under the kitchen sink, felt super proud of myself, then spent the next week checking it every single morning like it was a pet I forgot to feed. Pretty sure my husband thinks I lost it. It never went off once, which is good, but now I'm side eyeing the washer and the guest bath wondering if I should just buy three more. For 26 bucks I'd rather be the weird alarm lady than the one tearing out wet carpet.
