Hot take: escalator pits in dead malls are actually kinda creepy, not cool
Tbh I used to think the rusted escalator pits at abandoned malls were the best photo spots. Then a security guard I ran into at Westland Mall in Columbus told me about a guy who fell into one 6 months ago and broke his leg. That changed my mind real quick. Anyone else ever get spooked by something that seemed harmless at first?

Oh gosh, that story about the guy breaking his leg is awful. I totally get why that would change how you see those places.

Funny enough, I used to think those outdoor gear stores were just overpriced hype. You know, like people paying double for a jacket just because it has a certain logo. But hearing stories like that really flips the switch for me. Now I see how having the right gear can actually keep you from ending up in a bad situation instead of just looking cool. It's one of those things you don't appreciate until you hear about someone finding out the hard way.

I read an article a while back about a guy who got caught in a sudden snowstorm on a day hike in the White Mountains. He had a cheap cotton jacket and regular sneakers, and by the time they found him he had really bad hypothermia. The article kept mentioning how a proper waterproof shell and insulated boots would have made all the difference. It’s crazy how fast weather can turn on you, especially above tree line. That story comes to mind every time I see someone trying to save $50 on a jacket that could literally save their life.
