Fixing a friend's budget build showed me how bad guides mess up work flow
I used a popular guide to help a friend assemble his first gaming PC on a tight budget. The guide had gaps, like not mentioning compatibility issues with his older case. We lost a whole afternoon redoing cable routes because the steps were unclear. This is exactly what happens when I give vague tasks to my grooming staff at the shop. They spin their wheels on easy jobs, just like we did with the build. Now I write detailed checklists for every service, mirroring a solid PC build guide. It cuts down on mistakes and saves time for everyone.

So that guide was about as useful as instructions for a flat pack bookshelf, right?

That comparison might be too generous for my work. I have successfully built things using those cryptic pictograms. My guide probably created more chaos than a missing shelf bracket.

Honestly, my buddy Dave once tried to build a desk using instructions that made no sense. He spent hours putting pieces together wrong, and it all fell apart when he tried to use it. Tbh, it was a total disaster, worse than any flat pack nightmare. That chaos totally reminds me of what @paige_foster said about their guide creating more chaos. Ngl, some guides just set you up to fail from the start. My friend still gets nervous around assembly manuals after that mess.
