The grocery cart return guy in Spokane taught me a lesson I didn't ask for

Last Tuesday I watched a cart guy chase a runaway cart across a wet parking lot, and he nearly got clipped by a minivan. He just shrugged and kept going, so it got me thinking about how we treat the stuff everyone assumes someone else will handle. I never returned my carts before, but now I walk them back even in the rain, and it costs me maybe 2 minutes each trip. My neighbor thinks I'm nuts, but honestly, I've seen way more people leave carts near the curb than walk them in, and it's not that hard. Has anyone else had a random moment like that where a stranger's dumb job made you change a tiny habit for good?
