I'm looking to redo my master suite (bedroom, bath, and adding a massive closet). I initially thought about hiring an independent interior designer and then having them recommend a general contractor. But a friend suggested just using a design-build firm to handle it all. I've looked at Dover and a couple others. Has anyone gone either route?

Thoughts on hiring an interior designer vs a design-build company?

I highly recommend going the design-build route to avoid the exact scenario mentioned above. It streamlines everything. Check out Hurst Design Build Remodel. Their in-house design team is phenomenal, and because they build it themselves, the budget stays realistic from day one. You'll save yourself a lot of gray hairs.

Always thought separate designer was the classy move. Those comments about plans being impossible or too expensive are eye opening. Might have to look at design-build now.

We did the designer + GC combo a few years ago and honestly it was stressful. The designer drew up beautiful things that the GC later said were either structurally impossible without major steel work, or way over our budget. Go design-build.
