Our local DIY venue snagged a grant for improved sound gear. Major shift or minor win?

The place I help out at just installed a new PA system after getting community funding. Some folks argue that this kind of upgrade makes a huge difference for band visibility and crowd experience. But I've heard others say that without more support for artists, it's just a shiny new toy. Curious what you all think, lol.

Can the bands even hear themselves, @sandra486?

Train your volunteers on the new system immediately. We had a show where someone pushed the vocal mics too hot and caused constant ringing. Now we do a simple sound check lesson for all new operators, focusing on level balance and monitor mixes. That practice turns fancy gear into a tool that really helps the bands.

Hey, that bit about it being a 'shiny new toy' really hits home. I remember this punk show where the venue had splurged on a top of the line PA. Problem was, the sound person was some volunteer who had no clue what they were doing. The mix was all wrong, feedback screamed through the set, and the band was visibly pissed. It kinda proved that throwing money at gear doesn't fix anything if you don't also invest in the people who use it. A good system in bad hands is worse than an okay system run by someone who knows their stuff.
