Unpopular opinion: Faking age on furniture for a quick sale bugs me

A guy brought in a plain dresser and wanted me to chip the edges and add fake water rings to pass it off as vintage. I did it for the cash, but now I keep thinking about the next buyer getting tricked. Ever take a job that just sits wrong with you after?

Faked a patina on a table once. Now I give it the side-eye every time I walk by.

Actually, that's not really a patina then, that's just a finish. A real patina is the wear and color something gets from age and use. You can always tell because the fake stuff looks even, but real wear tells a story.

Tried that stain-and-sandpaper trick on a dresser years back. It just looked like damage, not like someone actually lived with it. Had to strip it down and start over.
