The janitor's 2 word advice on quitting my last job

I was crying in the break room at 7 AM after my third shift of the week, and the janitor just said, 'Leave before it owns you.' That one line got me to put in my notice that same day, and six months later I make $2 less an hour but actually sleep. Anyone else had a stranger's offhand comment settle a big fork in the road for them?

My old supervisor used to say shit like “grit is a muscle” and I bought it hard, thought leaving meant you were weak. Then a waitress at a diner I’d never been to saw me crying over my phone during a lunch rush and just said “that job will still be there when you’re dead, you won’t be.” It hit different because she didn’t know me or my situation, zero stake in it. I handed in my notice two days later, took a pay cut, and honestly the only thing I lost was a reason to hate Sundays. Sometimes the truth lands better from a stranger cause they ain’t trying to manage your feelings.
