Rant: My friend in Austin thinks a 401k match is just free money you can pull out anytime.
Honestly, he didn't realize the tax penalties and vesting schedules make it way more complicated. Has anyone else had to explain this to someone?

Timed lock" is right, my cousin thought the same thing about his company stock options.

Remember when people used to get pensions? My grandpa retired from the plant and just got a check every month, no weird rules about vesting. Now everything's a puzzle you solve wrong and lose money.

Read a story about a guy who cashed out his 401k when he changed jobs, called it a bonus. He got hit with a huge tax bill he wasn't ready for, plus the early withdrawal fee. It's like they make the rules confusing on purpose so people mess up. Your friend is seeing the match as instant cash, but it's more like a timed lock on that money. You gotta explain it's part of your pay, but with a bunch of strings attached for years.
