A client told me my sketches were 'too safe' and it stuck with me

I was showing a long time client some new dress ideas last week, all clean lines and classic shapes. She looked at them and said, 'These are nice, Tyler, but they feel a bit too safe for you.' It hit different because she's usually my biggest cheerleader for that style. Made me realize I'd gotten stuck in a comfortable box without noticing. Has anyone else had a comment push them to try a new design direction?

Safe is what people actually buy and wear though.

But safe stuff gets boring fast, right? People end up buying the thing that makes them feel something, even if it's a bit out there. The safe choice just sits on the rack.

But what counts as safe? A plain white tee is safe, but so is a basic black dress. Are we talking about basics that go with anything, or just boring clothes? My friend only buys neutral colors, but her whole closet works together. Where's the line between a smart basic and something that's just dull?
