Vent: Tried the 'freeze your sponge to kill germs' trick for a month

I saw a tip online that said putting your kitchen sponge in the freezer overnight would kill bacteria without needing to microwave it. I tried it every night for 30 days straight. Turns out, freezing just puts the germs to sleep, they wake right back up. My sponge started smelling worse than before after about two weeks. Now I'm back to just buying new ones every couple of weeks. Has anyone found a cleaning method that actually works and doesn't wreck the sponge?

Yeah, the whole cleaning the sponge thing... I just gave up and switched to those Swedish dishcloths. They dry out fast between uses so they don't stay wet and gross. You can actually wring them out and they get stiff, and just toss them in the laundry with your towels once a week. Mine lasted like six months before it started to fall apart. Sponges are just bacteria hotels no matter what you do to them.

I used to think sponges were fine but "bacteria hotels" from @brian_ramirez convinced me to switch.
