Found out my 'healthy' smoothie had more sugar than a can of soda

I was doing this green smoothie diet for two weeks, feeling pretty good about it. Then I got bored and decided to actually track what I was putting in my NutriBullet. I looked up the sugar in a cup of orange juice and a banana on my phone. The numbers shocked me. That one morning drink had over 40 grams of sugar. A can of Coke has 39. I was basically drinking dessert for breakfast while thinking I was being healthy. The whole plan fell apart right then because I felt like I couldn't trust any of my food choices. How do you even figure out what's actually good for you without getting a chemistry degree? Has anyone else had a moment like that where the numbers just ruined a diet you thought was working?

Ugh, @terry_lewis21, I gotta disagree hard. My sister is diabetic and the difference between a natural sugar in an apple and the high fructose corn syrup in soda is HUGE for her body. It's not just about calories, it's how your system processes it. Saying all sugar is the same is just not true.

My buddy @terry_lewis21 must have a stomach made of STEEL because my body sure knows the difference between a donut and a handful of grapes. I ate a whole bag of gummy bears once thinking "sugar is sugar" and spent the next three hours regretting every single life choice I ever made. Your liver treats the stuff from candy way different than fruit, at least that's what my doctor yelled at me last year.
