A weird moment at my cousin's wedding made me rethink small talk
I was stuck talking to a distant relative who asked how work was, and I accidentally told her I was worried about layoffs. She just said 'me too' and we had the first real talk I'd had all night. How do you handle those 'how are you' questions when you're actually stressed?

Honestly, I just answer honestly now, since you never know who needs to hear it.

Yeah, that's a solid point, @james_kim. I used to overthink my replies, trying to guess what people wanted. Now I just say the plain truth I've learned. It's surprising how often someone messages me later saying that basic, honest take was exactly what they needed to hear. You really don't know who's just quietly reading along. So sticking to what actually worked for me, even if it seems simple, feels like the only way to go.

That's so true about the quiet readers. Makes me wonder, what's the most basic piece of advice you've given that got a big reaction later? Like, telling someone to just get some sleep, or to actually read the manual for once.
