Found a cable run from 1998 that used a garden hose as conduit

Look at it from a basement in 1998. That hose was just a sleeve to pull the cable through a dirty joist space. It was never in sunlight. The plastic might get brittle but it's not carrying current. People act like every old DIY fix is a house fire waiting to happen, but most of the time it's just ugly and weird. This one is more funny than dangerous.

My uncle told me to always book a month in Medellin, not a week

My buddy booked a whole month in Lisbon last year and hated it. He was stuck in a noisy apartment with a broken AC and couldn't get his money back. Sometimes a week is enough to know you picked the wrong area. What if you get there and realize you don't like the vibe or the neighbors are awful? A month is a big commitment to a place you've never seen.

Rant: I just read a trade journal article that said a 0.001 inch tool deflection can cause a 0.003 inch error in the cut, which is way more than I thought.

Tell me about it, I spent a whole afternoon chasing a finish issue once only to find my holder had more runout than my dating history. Felt like a total clown. I get the "just cut metal" mindset, but that multiplier effect they talk about is sneaky. It's not about one perfect part, it's about every part being a little off and adding up over a run. My cheapo indicator lives in my box now for a quick sanity check before I start blaming my feeds or the machine.

Am I the only one who used to lie about being fine when I wasn't?

Yeah, but what made you finally open up?

Reading about the old growth timber in the Pacific Northwest got me thinking

Wait, are you sure about that 14,000 board feet number for one tree? That seems really high. I remember reading that a huge old growth fir might yield around 8,000 board feet, and that's already a giant tree. The math for framing three houses with one tree feels off too, since you need different grades and sizes of wood. Modern engineered lumber is definitely different, but it lets us build with smaller, younger trees which we have more of. The old growth had unique qualities, but we just can't build everything that way anymore.
