The week a 30-year-old hydraulic valve decided to fight back

Got called to a 1960s office building downtown for a car stuck between floors. The usual stuff, right? Found the issue was a main control valve that hadn't been touched since Reagan was president. Spent three full days trying to free it up, using every trick in the book and two cans of penetrating oil. The building manager kept asking why it was taking so long, like I was just hanging out. Finally got it moving, but the whole job felt like wrestling a bear. Anyone else ever have a simple job turn into a week-long nightmare because of one ancient part?

Heard a similar story about old elevator parts being a total pain. Was it just totally seized up from years of gunk?

The counterweight guide rails in a 1928 building I worked on were completely welded shut by rust. We had to cut out three entire sections with a torch. The new steel alone cost more than the labor to install it.
