A customer told me my solder joints looked like 'cold oatmeal'

They were right, I was rushing and not letting the iron heat up enough. Now I always wait a full 30 seconds after the light turns green on my Hakko station before I touch the board. Anyone else have a specific tip for getting a clean joint every time?

Honestly, is a perfect joint that critical for most hobby work? As long as it works and isn't a safety risk, I'd call it good.

My first workbench had miter joints that were off by a good 3mm. It's held up for five years of beating on it. For a bookshelf I built last month, the dados aren't perfect but the books don't care. If it's solid and does the job, that's a win in my book.

My first dovetail was a mess but the drawer still works fine.
