I chose to rewire a 1950s panel myself instead of a full service upgrade for a client on a budget, and it's been solid for 2 years now.

Everyone pushes for a full 200-amp upgrade immediately, but after mapping the actual load and replacing the old cloth wiring with modern 12/2, the existing 100-amp service in this Portland bungalow has handled everything just fine, including a new mini-split, so when is an upgrade truly necessary versus just the safe, recommended default?

That's a solid point. So much advice is just the expensive, one-size-fits-all solution when a careful fix works fine.

Yeah, the "one-size-fits-all solution" thing is everywhere. I saw a whole thread about how people are told to buy fancy gear for a hobby when you can just learn the basics with what you have.

Got me wondering what kind of careful fixes you've seen work best. Like, is it more about learning a specific skill to repair things, or just being smart about using cheaper materials that do the same job?
