I always thought the old-school feeler gauge was fine for setting valves, but a dial indicator changed the game

Seeing the exact thousandth on the dial is a whole different world. I had a similar moment with an old straight six, but it was with timing. Used a timing light for years, then a friend showed me how to read the actual marks on the crank pulley with a simple pointer. Felt like I'd been doing it blind.

Appreciation post: Finding my old mentor's repair notes from the 80s

My shop floor is covered in PDF printouts and coffee stains. The idea that paper makes you smarter is just nostalgia for a slower time. A good tech follows the fault path in their head, not with their fingers.

Vent: My flashlight died in the middle of the old Sunrise Mall food court.

My old Maglite died in the Starlight Drive-In projection booth once. Always carry a backup headlamp now.

I chose to rewire a 1950s panel myself instead of a full service upgrade for a client on a budget, and it's been solid for 2 years now.

Yeah, the "one-size-fits-all solution" thing is everywhere. I saw a whole thread about how people are told to buy fancy gear for a hobby when you can just learn the basics with what you have.

My take on destination comic cons did a full 180 after Atlanta

Traveling for cons still feels like an expensive treat for people with money to spare, right? The parade energy and creator chats are cool, but can't you get that at a local con without spending hundreds on travel? After a few days in a crowded hotel, doesn't the whole thing start to feel like a tired routine? Supporting local events builds real community without the hassle of planes and hotels. Isn't it just paying for hype but with more steps and less sleep?
