Powder coating my bike rack in the driveway taught me one thing

I spent last Saturday afternoon trying to bake powder coat onto a used bike rack I got for $15 at a garage sale in Lincoln. My oven was too small so I made a rig with a heat gun and a cardboard box, which caught fire twice. But it actually worked, the coating cured and the rack looks brand new. The real surprise was that the whole process took 4 hours and I messed up the first coat completely. I thought powder coating was some pro-level thing but it turns out it's pretty forgiving if you just keep the heat moving. Has anyone else tried DIY powder coating with tools that are not meant for it, or am I just the weird one with a scorched driveway?
