Tried using 5-minute mud on a whole ceiling. Never again.

Thought I'd save time on a small bathroom job last Tuesday. Mixed up a batch, slapped it on. By the time I got to the second coat it was already setting up in the pan. Had to run and mix another batch. Wasted a half bag. What do you guys use for quick ceiling patches when you're in a pinch?

Honestly, the real trick nobody talks about is using hot mud for the first coat and then topping it with all purpose for the finish. I keep a box of 20 minute on hand for ceiling patches specifically. Mix small batches, like a cup at a time, and you won't get caught with a pan full of concrete. I also wet my hawk and pan with cold water before mixing, gives you an extra 30 seconds or so before it kicks off.

20 minute mud on a ceiling sounds like a total nightmare to me.

Oh man, I feel you completely. Mudding a ceiling is one of those jobs that looks easy but always turns into a fight. Tbh I'd rather patch a dozen walls than deal with overhead work any day.
