Scavenging materials from a demo site: smart reuse or stealing?

I found some nice planks in a dumpster at a construction spot last week. On one hand, it feels good to save stuff from the landfill for my patio bench. On the other hand, I didn't ask anyone if it was okay to take it. Now I'm stuck wondering if this was clever or wrong. How do you handle stuff like this?

Honestly, does it ever really hurt to just ask? I've grabbed scrap wood before too, but now I try to catch a worker for a quick second. Ngl, most guys on site don't care at all if you're taking stuff from the dumpster, they'll just wave you on. It saves them space and you get free materials. But asking once makes it totally clear and you never have to feel weird about it later.

So @patricia_black44, what's the weirdest thing you've overthought asking for?

Man, this hits on something I see all the time. People, myself included, will overthink a simple social interaction and end up in a gray area. Like @mia_sullivan said, asking takes two seconds and clears the air, but our brains turn it into a whole thing. I’ve seen neighbors hesitate to return a misdelivered package for the same weird reason.
